About Us

Welcome!

Sailing offers a social scene and lifetime network. It promotes physical fitness, seamanship, self-reliance, and good sportsmanship. Sailing is fun, surprisingly affordable, green, and can be done for pleasure and for competition.

With a history of over 40 years of instruction, Leatherlips Yacht Club has taught more than 3,000 children and adults to sail. Pleasantly sited on the west shore of O’Shaughnessy Reservoir across from the Columbus Zoo, the building has a large patio close to the water. In the village of Shawnee Hills, the club primarily serves Dublin, Ohio, but sailors come from Powell, Columbus, Westerville, Alum Creek, Hilliard, the region.

If you love water, sunshine, and excitement, our learn-to-sail program is for you.

For information about the program, contact Kevin Tschantz.  614-738-4351.

Flying Juniors, or FJs, will be used as our primary teaching boats. We have a few Lasers for more advanced sailors, and two Lidos for those who desire a roomier more stable boat. We also have two new little boats, Oppis, to expand our teaching options. Other fleet boats, Daysailer and Thistle, will be used later in the course as an introduction to the Leatherlips fleets.

We do not rent out our boats. We do offer private sailing lessons. To continue with sailing after the lessons, you have a couple of options. You can crew for someone at the club. This is a cost free method. Better yet is to become a member at LYC. Member benefits include a key to the gate and clubhouse, use of the club virtually any time, the right to hold parties at the clubhouse ($100 fee), and one year-round boat storage space (bring your own boat). You will learn about our various fleet boats in the classes.
